Science

What is Berberine?

Berberine is an alkaloid found in plants like Goldenseal, Barberry, Oregon Grape and Goldthread. Alkaloids help plants protect themselves against predators and regulate their growth. They also offer benefits for the overall health of humans.*

Berberine has a rich history of use in traditional herbalism for a number of common purposes, especially to support blood sugar metabolism and promote healthy weight loss.* Modern research now bolsters what common wisdom told us about berberine.

There are numerous research studies that support Berberine's use as a dietary supplement. In a series of two double-blind studies, Berberine was found to be influential for healthy weight management.*1,2

What makes Enzymedica's Berberine better?

Berberine can be sourced from many plants, including Barberry and Goldenseal.  Unfortunately, Goldenseal is an “at risk” plant due to overharvesting in the wild and its use is strongly discouraged by plant conservationists.

The form we use comes from Berberis aristata, commonly called Indian barberry, which grows abundantly, is naturally sustainable and rich in valuable phytochemicals.

Our Berberine is also standardized at 95%. This provides a consistent amount of Berberine with each and every serving. In addition, our capsules are enteric-coated for targeted release. In the GI tract, berberine binds with other berberine molecules to form insoluble compounds that can’t be absorbed. Our formula uses targeted-delivery capsules to eliminate that issue.

Consult with physician prior to use if you are pregnant or nursing, taking medications or have a medical condition.

Caution: This product is not intended for individuals with impaired glucose metabolism such as prediabetes or diabetes.

Berberine may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline and related antibiotics. Berberine produces significant inhibition of CYP3A enzymes in humans. Because these enzymes metabolize most drugs, berberine may decrease the clearance of many medications thereby potentiating their effect.
